Salty foods, a hectic travel schedule, certain medications and hormonal changes can all lead to unwanted bloating and weight gain from water retention. Taking a supplement can provide relief from bloating*, however there are several factors that contribute to swelling or bloating. Below are 5 tips to help ease water retention:

  1. Reduce salt intake: Salty foods can increase water retention.
  2. Movement: keep moving and undertake exercises that could reduce swelling. Moving muscles in the part of your body that is experiencing water retention may help relieve some of the excess fluid. Fluid is less likely to pool in one place when you move around.
  3. Elevation: when resting, put your feet up (elevate them). Hold the affected limb above the level of your heart several times a day. It may also be helpful to sleep with the swollen limb elevated. This will help the fluid flow away from the swollen area.
  4. Massage: gently massage the bloated area toward your heart. This may help move the excess water out of the area.
  5. Compression: specialized compression stockings, socks and sleeves can help keep pressure on the effected area to help the fluid from building up.
